5.0 out of 5 stars soundtracks which tell the story, 23 Jan 2004
By A Customer
this is one of the most exciting pieces of music i've heard. a soundtrack today is what opera and other forms of music and storytelling was before film happened; nyman and albarn have created a funny, harrowing, winding and tempestuous score which enhances an already good, bizarre film. if you like the soundtrack to crash by howard shore you'll be similarly spellbound by this piece.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some really good diamonds amongst the rough, 20 Jul 2000
By Duncan Sellars "Duncan" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Unsurprisingly, given the movie, the overwhelming theme of the CD is 'creepy horror'. Instruments fit the 1840s period of the film, being mostly string or wind based; violin, banjo and trumpet are heavily used. Some really good suspenseful numbers like Stranger at the Window and the march-like Boyd's Journey make for excellent atmospheric music, but are unfortunately countered by duds like Welcome to Fort Spencer, which is too heavy on the trumpets for my liking, and Weendigo Myth, which features rather incongruous (I thought) chanting. Still, for the brooding horror inspired by tracks like Martha and the Horses and the brilliant The Cave, this soundtrack is worth the money. If you go for this kind of stuff, I would also recommend the soundtrack to Interview with The Vampire, which contains a similar sense of horror but with a more classical feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky originality, 26 Oct 2009
By Cheeky Monkey (NW England) - See all my reviews

When I saw Ravenous I was impressed with the story (until the ending), the acting and the overall feel of the film, but most of all it was the soundtrack. It's hard to describe but it perfectly matches the quirky cheekiness of the film and some of the tracks really stand out. Okay, so there are no great sweeping strings of stirring themes but they would have been completely at odds with the film, but instead we have banjos, accordions and a much earthier sound, as well as strings and percussion. Buy it for something a little bit different.
